Anderson County High School boys basketball coach Jordan Jeffers knows his young team can’t afford to overlook any opponent.

The Mavericks got that message loud and clear as they’ve endured their share of growing pains and battled through multiple injuries this season.

But things appear to be trending upward. Anderson County closed out the first round of its District 4-AA schedule with a 57-37 road victory over Gibbs on Friday night at Jerry H. Sharp Gymnasium in Corryton.

“We told the guys before the game that we wanted to be confident, but we don’t want to be arrogant,” Jeffers said. “We have no reason to be arrogant, and I was proud of our guys for their effort.

“Not just their effort, but the way they showed up and played the game. There was no arrogance, no overlooking. We had to come here and grind one out. We’re 3-1 in the district, and we’ve played three of those games on the road. Tonight, it was just show up and play.”

Cam Lawson scored 19 points for the Mavericks, who also routed Union County 82-52 on Tuesday, Jan. 13. Rocky Brown added a career-high 18 points against the Eagles (2-11, 2-1).

“Rocky is just an animal; he’s a man,” Jeffers said. “He’s stronger than just about anybody he goes up against.”

Jeffers noted that Gibbs is better than its record indicates.

“This Gibbs team is a really good basketball team; they’re better than their record shows,” he said. “They got a big win over here the other night against Scott.

“And they were right there with us in this game. If a couple of shots go the other way, this is a different ballgame.”

Anderson County (7-10, 3-1) tallied 15 assists and committed just eight turnovers in Friday’s win.
