Lady Mavs stun Scott with pressure defense

Revenge was sweet for the Anderson County High School girls basketball team Friday night as it returned to District 4-AAA play and avenged its lone league loss with a 45-33 home win over Scott.

“Their defense did a good job up there,” Lady Mavericks Coach Mitch Cupples said of Scott’s 39-27 win on Jan. 6 in Huntsville. “We didn’t execute, but they had a game plan and did a good job.

“We came out tonight and it started the same way. I called a timeout and we started picking up the defensive pressure. I told them in the locker room before the game that we were going to be aggressive. They want me to give them permission to be aggressive, and I told them to be aggressive.”

The Lady Mavs (10-10, 4-1 in District 4-AAA) took that message to heart, forcing the Lady Highlanders into 25 turnovers.

“My coaches said that we forced them into 25 turnovers,” Cupples said. “I know it was somewhere in the mid-20s.”

Offensively, Bethany Lowe led the charge with a game-high 23 points, including 15 in the first half. She nearly matched Anderson County’s total output from the previous matchup.

“We scored 45 points tonight, and that’s the most we’ve scored in a while,” Cupples said.

“It’s definitely more than we scored at Scott County. Bethany did a good job running, and she did a good job attacking in the half court.”

Macy Basford added 10 points for Anderson County, which stayed tied with Clinton atop the district standings.

The loss dropped Scott into sole possession of second place.

The win also snapped a two-game skid for the Lady Mavericks, who fell to William Blount (37-20) and Cocke County (48-28) earlier in the week.
