Mavericks wrestle to region runner-up finish
Anderson County High School’s boys wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the Region 2-A Championships over the weekend.
The Mavericks finished second in the team standings Saturday, trailing only Pigeon Forge at the tournament held at Gibbs High School.
Anderson County left Northeast Knoxville with eight state sectional qualifiers, including five regional champions.
“We’ve always been more of a tournament team this year than a dual team,” Mavericks coach Matt Slone said. “We had nine sectional qualifiers and five region champions, and we did enough to finish second and be region runner-up as a team.
“We picked up bonus points in some matches with technical falls and pins, and that helped us hang on to second place.”
The Class A sectional championships will be held Saturday at Gibbs.
Anderson County’s regional champions were Aiden Reed (113 pounds), Zed Hulet (138), Hayden Harrell (144), Deamion Leavell (175) and Evan Prewitt (190).
Other sectional qualifiers for the Mavericks were Max Wolfley, the regional runner-up at 150; Slade Alley, who placed third at 285; and Britton Tackett (106) and Daniel Massengill (132), who each finished fourth in their respective brackets.
Two Lady Mavericks also qualified for sectionals. Danielle Connors was a regional runner-up at 126 pounds, while Kiera Bradshaw placed third at 185 pounds in the girls regional championships, which were contested Friday at Knoxville Halls High School.
