The Clinton City Council voted unanimously to appoint Zach Farrar to the city School Board for Ward 3.

The council made the decision at its regular Feb. 23 meeting.

Previous School Board member Lorie Wilson stepped down because she moved out of Ward 3, the South Clinton Ward.

When city School Board members step down in the middle of their terms, the City Council to appoints a replacement until the next election.

Kelly Johnson, director of Clinton City Schools, said Farrar intended to run for the seat in the next election and had already submitted a petition.

She spoke in favor of Farrar’s appointment at the meeting, noting that Farrar’s two children and wife are alumni of Clinton City Schools.

Farrar has spoken at school events on multiple occasions.

Annually, Johnson said, Farrar speaks “very candidly” to sixth graders about the importance of making good life choices. He has also spoken at Veteran’s Day programs, and teaches Junior Achievement classes at both Clinton and South Clinton elementary schools.

Farrar previously served on the Clinton City Council.

“He leads in a very ethical, genuine manner,” Johnson said.

Farrar did not come up to the lectern to speak. However, from the audience he said he was “humbled” by Johnson’s words.

Mayor Scott Burton wished Farrar well.

“I know you’re a good man, and you wouldn’t do this if you weren’t going to give 100%,” Burton said.

Clinton City Schools includes Clinton, North Clinton, and South Clinton elementary schools.

It does not include the middle and high schools in Clinton, which are parts of the Anderson County school system.

Daycare

Clinton is looking to finish work on a daycare building for city employees in Jaycee Park by May 1.

During the Feb. 23 meeting, City Manager Roger Houk said the project was 80% complete.

The city is renovating a former National Guard Amory building at 214 Nave St. to be the new daycare building near the Anderson County Fairgrounds.

Houck has said the daycare will also serve children of Eagle Bend Industrial Park employees. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley will run the daycare.

Mariner Point light

Also at the same meeting, Houck said the city should receive the control cabinet for a new traffic signal at the intersection of Mariner Point Drive and Charles G. Sievers Boulevard within three to four weeks.

He described it as one of the last steps toward completing that traffic light.
