Lady Mavs delivers big hits, no-hitter in tourney
It was a busy week on the diamond for the Anderson County High School softball team, and the results were mixed for the Lady Mavericks, who spent the holiday weekend at a tournament in Ooltewah.
They closed out their stay with an 8-4 loss to Knoxville’s Grace Christian Academy.
Bella Brummett, who has been swinging a hot bat for the Lady Mavericks (9-9 overall, 1-1 in District 4-AAA), had a big day at the plate against the Lady Rams, a top Division II-A team.
She went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Ella Varmer also went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Miranda McCracken doubled in the contest.
In another tournament game, Anderson County blanked Hixson, 10-0, as pitcher Addison Sharp tossed a no-hitter.
“Addison Sharp threw a no-hitter against Hixson, and our defense did a good job backing her up,” Lady Mavericks Coach Lindsey Verner said. “I thought we played pretty well against some good competition in Ooltewah.”
Sharp threw a complete game, going four innings with one strikeout and two walks.
Harlee Taylor led a potent offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Brummett doubled and scored twice, while Reece Brock went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Anderson County also edged East Hamilton as Brock delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Ashton Thurman hit a home run in that game, while McCracken went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
The Lady Mavericks routed McMinn County, 11-2, as Taylor went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. She doubled and scored twice. Brummett finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Thurman added a hit, two runs and two RBIs.
Maci Benge turned in a solid performance in the circle, going four innings. She allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out six.
Anderson County opened tournament play with a 6-2 loss to Marion County, which went on to defeat Maryville for the tournament championship.
On Thursday, the Lady Mavericks renewed their rivalry with Clinton but dropped a 5-4 decision in 10 innings. The Lady Dragons won on a walk-off after scoring on an Anderson County error.
Brummett doubled and homered in that game, while Cindle Justice went 1-for-4 with a double. Thurman finished 1-for-6 with a double.
The Lady Mavericks opened the week with a district victory over Union County, defeating the Lady Patriots 4-2 despite committing four errors.
Trinity Lawson had a pair of extra-base hits, recording both a double and a triple while driving in two runs. Thurman tripled and scored, and Kara Waddell also tripled and crossed the plate.
Addison Grooms pitched a complete game, going seven innings and allowing two unearned runs on four hits. She walked one and struck out four.
