Lady Mavericks avenge Coalfield loss

The week was a successful one for the Anderson County High School flag football team.

The Lady Mavericks defeated Coalfield 26-13 Thursday night, avenging an earlier loss to the Lady Yellow Jackets this season.

Anderson County darted out to a fast start and built a 26-0 halftime lead.

The Lady Mavericks added the game after a cancellation.

“Stone Memorial canceled on us, so we played Coalfield again,” Anderson County Coach Jonathan Cotton said. “We were ahead 26-0 at halftime and we subbed down.”

Kiena Gillum went 6 of 11 through the air for 161 yards, with three touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Jocelyn Amos caught a 61-yard touchdown pass for Anderson County.

Chloe Freeman had three receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown, while Anaya Witkowski added three catches for 62 yards and a score.

Witkowski made an impact on defense with three interceptions.

On Tuesday, April 7, the Lady Mavericks routed Karns 38-6.

Gillum emerged as a dual threat against the Lady Beavers. She completed 6 of 15 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns. She also rushed for 41 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Carly Whitson also played quarterback against Karns. She completed 4 of 12 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Amos had 125 receiving yards and caught three touchdown passes. Vaeya Torkelson hauled in a 66-yard touchdown reception, and Freeman added an 11-yard rushing touchdown.
