Anderson County High School’s flag football team will play for first place when it hosts Fulton tonight, April 22.

The Lady Mavericks’ game against the Lady Falcons begins at 7 p.m. at ACHS.

The game has been rescheduled twice, but it will be played tonight with the top spot in the standings hanging in the balance.

Anderson County earned the right to play for first place when it notched a 19-6 victory over Carter, which reached the state tournament last season.

“This was a big win for us,” Lady Mavericks Coach Jonathan Cotton said. “Carter was really stingy with its defense, and we identified them as one of the teams to beat.

“They’re a good team.”

Tonight’s game ends a tough stretch of region games, which began approximately two weeks ago with a 26-13 victory over Coalfield.

“We will have played the three toughest teams in our region back-to-back-to-back,” Cotton said. “We’ll see how well we navigate through this stretch of games that I scheduled.”

Against the Lady Hornets, quarterback Keina Gillum was 17-for-43 passing for 188 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Chloe Freeman had six receptions for 56 yards and was on the receiving end of a scoring strike. Ella Clark also had a 1-yard touchdown reception.

Defensively, Anaya Witkowski returned an interception 79 yards for a touchdown, a play that likely set a state record, according to Cotton.
