‘Red Velvet Cake War’ opens Friday at ACHS

Norris Little Theatre presents “The Red Velvet Cake War” this Friday through Sunday at the Anderson County High School theater. Tickets are available at the door.
There are performances scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday (May 8, 9), and again at 2 p.m. on Sunday (May 10).
Tickets are available at the door for $15 each (age 5 and under free), with only cash or check accepted.
The play is described as a Southern-themed comedy.
It premiered at the Johnson City Community Theatre in Johnson City, Tennessee, on Oct. 8, 2010.
The play’s own website gives this description of it:
“In this riotously funny comedy, the three Verdeen cousins could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion, their outrageous antics delighting local gossips in the small town of Sweetgum.
“Having ‘accidentally’ crashed her minivan through the bedroom wall of her husband’s girlfriend’s doublewide, Gaynelle is one frazzled nerve away from a meltdown.
“Peaches is struggling to decide if it’s time to have her long-absent trucker husband declared dead, and Jimmie Wyvette is resorting to extreme measures [to] win the affections of Sweetgum’s newest widower.
“The cousins can’t back out of the reunion now; it’s on, and Gaynelle’s hosting it. As this fast-paced romp barrels on, the audience will wish their own family reunions were this fun!”
The play features a cast of players recruited locally by the Norris Little Theatre.
Writers of “The Red Velvet Cake Wars” are Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, collectively known as Jones Hope Wooten, according to the website.
They “enjoy the reputation of being three of the most-popular and widely-produced playwrights in the United States,” it says.
“They specialize in writing laugh-out-loud comedies and creating vivid strong roles for women,” the website notes. “Because of their commitment to and support of local theatres across the nation, they’ve built a following with legions of loyal fans, and have been dubbed ‘America’s Playwrights.’
“Among them, they’ve written classic television, hit movies and off-Broadway comedy.
“Thousands of productions of their comedies …have entertained millions of theatregoers across America, as well as in Canada, Denmark, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Virgin Islands, England, Taiwan, France, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Scotland, Belgium, Panama, New Zealand, Bulgaria, Ecuador and Kenya.”
The Norris Little Theatre promises an entertaining time for all who attend its production of “The Red Velvet Cake War.”
