Moody, Anderson County High School’s senior distance specialist, had a big day at the state sectionals Thursday at Maryville College, winning both the girls’ 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs.
She has won multiple state championships in both cross country and track, and her final high school competition will come next week at the TSSAA Class AA state championships at the University of Tennessee’s Tom Black Track in Knoxville.
Moody won the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 56.54 seconds. She also crossed the finish line first in the 3,200 in 11:01.99.
“Not only did she win the 1600, but she set a big-time [personal record] and she finished in under five (minutes),” Anderson County Coach Harrison Calhoun said.
For the Mavericks, Joseph Hall won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 8.75 inches, punching his ticket to next week’s state championships.
“Joseph Hall almost jumped 24 feet in the long jump,” Calhoun said.
Anderson County’s Cameron Hardy finished third in the 3,200 last week and may earn a bid to the state meet. He crossed the finish line in 9:33.84.
“That’s all up in the air right now and we won’t know until they post all of the times, and we may not know until Friday,” Calhoun said. “I feel pretty good about it.”
Anderson County will have a smaller contingent at the state championships, but Calhoun remains excited.
“We don’t have as many people going to state,” he said. “We have two and we’re waiting to possibly get a third.
“But we’re a younger team this year.”
