Coal Creek sweeps before dead period

The Coal Creek 18U baseball team closed out its schedule before the TSSAA-mandated dead period with a pair of victories last week.

Coal Creek swept a doubleheader against the Oakdale Eagles at home on Monday, June 15, routing Oakdale 13-2 in the opener before edging the Eagles 7-6 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Coal Creek pounded out nine hits to snap a four-game losing streak.

Eli Ledford led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored. Cooper Downs finished 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and three RBIs.

Reese Young went 1-for-1 with a double, scored three runs and stole two bases. Pierson Lollar collected two hits and drove in a run. Jack Wilson singled and scored, while Conner Dabney singled, scored and stole three bases.

Four Coal Creek pitchers combined on the victory. Wilson earned the win after pitching one inning. Will Goerhing, Parker Vance and Hayden Ault also worked one inning each.

Coal Creek completed the sweep in the second game, earning victory on Dabney’s walk-off single.

Vance went 1-for-1 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, while Wyatt Ooten singled and drove in two runs.

On Thursday, Coal Creek traveled to Morgan Wallen Field in Corryton for a doubleheader against the Graveston Freebirds, but rain washed out the action after one inning.

Coal Creek grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when incoming freshman Pierson Lollar delivered an RBI.

The Freebirds answered in the bottom half of the inning on Isaiah Harmon’s sacrifice fly before the game was halted with two outs.

Ault started on the mound for Coal Creek. He allowed no hits while surrendering one unearned run and one walk before the game was called.
