Mavericks pin hopes on Sesan

Anderson County High School recently named Sean Sesnan as the new head coach of its wrestling program.

He replaces Matt Slone, who resigned following the 2025-26 season after building the Mavericks into a state championship-caliber program.

Slone started the program from the ground up, and over the past four seasons, Anderson County has produced multiple state-tournament qualifiers.

The Mavericks have also made multiple appearances in the TSSAA state duals championships in recent years.

Sesnan, who served as head coach at Watertown High School for the past four seasons, said he looks forward to building on the foundation Slone established.

At Watertown, Sesnan coached multiple state medalists and developed a Greco-Roman state champion.

He also has served as a coach for the Tennessee National Team, where he worked with recent Anderson County graduate Max Wolfley and incoming freshman Christian Wolfley, Max’s younger brother.

“They’ve had tremendous success, and I’m excited to get in there and get started,” Sesnan said. “I met some of the guys, and I’m just excited. We have a state champion coming back.”

A graduate of Wilson Central High School, Sesnan was one of Tennessee’s most-accomplished prep wrestlers. He was a two-time state runner-up in folkstyle wrestling, and compiled a career record of 187-12. He also captured two Greco-Roman state championships.

Following his high school career, Sesnan wrestled collegiately at Williams Baptist University in Arkansas before training at the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University.
