Mavericks golf opens with victory

The season began Monday, July 27, with a four-team match at Centennial Golf Course.
The Mavericks opened the campaign with a victory, edging Karns by one stroke. Anderson County finished with a team score of 166, while the Beavers posted a 167. Clinton, playing without its top golfer, Grant Hannah, who was competing in a junior tournament in Illinois, finished third with a 177. Oliver Springs was fourth at 200.
Max Stanfil paced the Mavericks with a 38. Maddox Tackett shot a 42, while Luke Baldwin and Hoyt Chadwell each carded a 43.
Anderson County Coach Dallas Cole was pleased with the victory, but said his team still has room to improve.
“I’ll take a win,” Cole said. “I’ll take a win whether it’s by one shot or 500 shots.
“This was a chance to see where we are, but I don’t think we played our best golf.”
The Lady Mavericks were the lone girls team in the match.
Molly Jackson and Lola Ellis each shot 45, while Audrey Woodson carded a 49.
Both Anderson County teams later competed in the 5Star Preps Masters, an elite two-day, 36-hole tournament at Three Ridges Golf Course in northeast Knox County.
The Mavericks tied for fourth in a field featuring many of East Tennessee’s top teams and golfers.
Maddox Tackett led Anderson County with a two-round total of 148, including a final-round 73.
Stanfil finished at 150 after shooting a 74 in the second round.
Chadwell posted a 155, while Britton Tackett finished at 183 and Baldwin shot 189.
The Lady Mavericks placed seventh in the 12-team field.
Ellis led the way with a two-round total of 172, highlighted by an opening-round 83. Woodson finished at 198, and Jackson carded a 200.
“Our players worked hard during the offseason and played in a lot of tournaments,” Cole said. “I was really happy with the way we played.
“One of our goals this year is to prove that we could compete with some of the bigger schools, and we did that.”
