Claxton Elementary sale set for March ‘27
Anderson County Schools is looking to auction the current Claxton Elementary School to pay for construction of a new school nearby.
Director of Schools Tim Parrott gave a timeline for the old school at 2218 Clinton Highway’s auction.
He defended that option at the Monday, Sept. 14, Anderson County Operations Committee meeting.
The school’s completion date for construction will be March 15 next year, he said.
It’s at 105 Fellowship Lane, and passersby can already see its construction from Clinton Highway.
Previously, the school system considered borrowing to cover the cost until the sale, but the Anderson County Budget Committee did not consider that.
Parrott said he now believes the school system has enough money to cover the costs until the auction by Stephenson Realty & Auction.
The school system plans to start advertising the property in December.
The auction will be in March.
Parrott said November and December aren’t good times for property auctions.
He said the only thing left to decide was stipulations, including the stipulation to use the current building for three additional months after the auction.
“We knew that without a tax increase we would have to sell that piece of property just to complete all the funding for that,” he said.
“It’s very uncommon that you see a school built without having to have a tax increase,” Operations Committee Chairman Tim Isbel said.
Parrott said construction was 70% completed and the school had already paid about $21 million for it. The full cost is $32 million.
