Lady Mavs battle through Burrow

The Lady Mavericks went 3-3 in the tournament, and entered this week with a 19-10 overall record and a 7-3 mark in district play.
Anderson County picked up victories over Mt. Juliet, Jackson County and Ooltewah.
“Our senior libero, Emerie Bullock, had an outstanding weekend,” ACHS Coach Jayme Smith said. “Our middle hitter, Lily McCormick, played well. She’s officially back from shoulder surgery.”
Smith said the Lady Mavericks showed flashes of their potential against a strong tournament field.
“When they’ve got energy and they get talking, they can look like they’re the best team, and some days they don’t,” Smith said.
“I think we did OK. I think we let a couple of matches slip away from us that we could have and should have won.
“It was big competition, and that’s part of the reason why we go to these tournaments, because we want to play some people that are better than us and that are going to challenge us,” she added.
“We’ll rise to the occasion. We just kind of waited around too late this weekend, and those teams were able to finish us off before we got going.”
The only statistics available from the tournament came from a three-set loss to Nashville’s Hume-Fogg, 25-16, 20-25, 15-10.
Khloe Wilkerson led Anderson County with 16 kills, while Bethany Lowe had a team-high 15 assists.
Addison Thames and Wilkerson had eight blocks apiece.
Delaney Long, Bullock, Wilkerson, Thames and Lowe each recorded eight digs.
Smith said the Lady Mavericks will use the tournament experience as they move forward.
“We’ll learn from it,” she said. “We’re going to build on it. We’re going to be ready to go.”
The Lady Mavericks entered the tournament looking to rebound from a pair of district losses earlier in the week. Anderson County was swept by rival Clinton before falling to Powell in five sets.
