Anderson County rallied past district-leading Knox Central in what was perhaps the Lady Mavericks’ biggest home match of the season Thursday, Sept. 24.

Anderson County won the opening set 26-24 before Central answered with victories of 25-23 and 25-20. The Lady Mavericks responded to take the fourth set 25-20 before dominating the decisive fifth set 15-6 to claim the match.

“We finally got a group on the court that just seemed to gel and work well together, and it went well,” Lady Mavericks Coach Jayme Smith said. “Still some hiccups, still some lags. We had a couple of leads that we let them come back and take away from us, but yeah, it went much better.”

Bethany Lowe led Anderson County with 10 kills and added four aces and 10 digs. Julia Owens dished out 30 assists and recorded 18 digs, while Emerie Bullock led the defense with 25 digs. Khloe Wilkerson contributed seven kills and 22 digs.

Middle hitters Lily McCormick and Addison Thames also drew praise from Smith. McCormick finished with four total blocks, including three solo blocks.

Anderson County improved to 22-10 overall and 8-3 in district play with the victory.

The Central win capped a three-match winning stretch for the Lady Mavericks.

Anderson County defeated Seymour in straight sets during an in-school match Wednesday, Sept. 23. The Lady Mavericks won 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.

A day earlier, Anderson County swept district opponent Halls 25-14, 25-14, 25-13 at home.

Lowe led the Lady Mavericks with 10 kills and two assists against Halls. Anderson County finished the match with 32 kills, 13 aces, 54 digs and 27 assists.

Smith said the Lady Mavericks appear to be finding their rhythm at an opportune time.

“I think it’s just a combination of finally coming together and getting a set rotation,” she said. “We don’t like to peak too early, so this is really about the time of year that we really want to start picking it up and playing our best ball.”

The Lady Mavericks returned to action Monday night with a road match against Hardin Valley Academy. Results were not available at press time.
