With three golfers among the top four individual finishers, the Anderson County boys golf team captured a district championship Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Lake Tansi.

The Lady Mavericks earned district runner-up honors, led by third- and fifth-place individual finishes.

Hunter Turpin led the Mavericks with a 74 over the 18-hole course, while Maddox Tackett carded a 76. Luke Baldwin shot a 77 to finish tied for fourth.

“They worked their tails off, both boys and girls,” Anderson County Coach Dallas Cole said. “The boys especially, they really put in a lot of effort and work this season. And I know we talked a few weeks ago about what we were looking forward to, and hopefully we can just keep carrying that momentum on to the next round.”

For the Lady Mavericks, Lola Ellis shot a 44 over nine holes to finish third, while Holly Jackson carded a 53 to place fifth.

“I’m super proud of the kids,” Cole said.

The Mavericks carried that momentum into the next round, capturing the region championship Monday, Sept. 28, at Springbrook Golf and Country Club in Niota.

Tackett paced Anderson County with a 74, followed by Baldwin with a 76 and Hoyt Chadwell with a 77. Turpin carded an 81, while Max Stanfill shot an 86.

The Lady Mavericks also competed in the region tournament and finished fourth.

With the region championship, the Mavericks punched their ticket to the state tournament.

Anderson County will compete in the state championship Oct. 5-6 at Sevierville Golf Club.
