Clinton’s attack delivers three more victories

A busy week for Clinton volleyball saw the Lady Dragons win three matches and drop a close one at Gibbs on Thursday, Sept. 24.

“We still have our highs and lows and some inconsistencies to deal with, but we’ve got another week of the regular season to try to work through everything,” CHS Coach Lorri Johnson said. “I mean, there were great moments in every match we played.”

Clinton picked up victories over Bearden (2-0), Karns (2-0) and Powell (3-1), leaving the Lady Dragons with a 21-11 overall record and an 8-4 mark in district play.

Senior outside hitter Maggie Moke was among Clinton’s standouts during the week.

“Maggie Moke has had a fantastic week,” Johnson said.

“She played just solid against Gibbs,” she added. “If you look at those scores, they were all close. We won the first one 31-29. Gibbs played really, really well compared to the first time we played them, and our girls didn’t make some of the adjustments they needed to make.”

The Lady Dragons ultimately fell to Gibbs in five sets.

Several Clinton players turned in strong individual performances throughout the week. Maggie Tubyville recorded 13 digs against Bearden, while Parker McGhee had 12 kills and five blocks against Powell.

Against Karns, Alaina Staudenmaier finished with eight assists and two aces.

Hannah Harvey led the defensive effort against Gibbs with 34 digs, while Anslee Carmichael had 16 kills and eight digs.

Johnson hopes the narrow loss to Gibbs will provide lessons the Lady Dragons can carry into the final week of the regular season.

“If you can learn more from your losses than your wins, hopefully we’ll be a much smarter team when we get back out there,” Johnson said.
