North Clinton Elementary School will add four classrooms and expand its gymnasium and parking area under a nearly $1 million project approved by the Clinton City Council.

The council unanimously approved $987,000 for the project at its Sept. 28 meeting. Council member Brian Hatmaker was absent.

“We are still in the very beginning stages of this project,” Clinton City Schools Director Kelly Johnson said.

Johnson said architects are still working on final plans, and the school system does not anticipate seeking bids until January.

“We don’t anticipate that the addition will be ready until the 2028-29 school year,” she said.

Annexation

Council members present also voted unanimously on two separate measures to annex property into Clinton and zone it for residential development.

The annexation can now take effect, while the zoning measure requires another vote before final approval.

The property includes five parcels at the end of Crestwood Drive, one parcel on Phillips Lane and one on Spring Street.

Matt Widner, building official with the Clinton Building and Codes Department, said at an earlier meeting that the property owners had requested annexation into the city.

Widner said becoming part of Clinton would likely provide the properties with city services, including police and fire protection, water and street lighting.

Fundraiser

Before the City Council meeting, the Clinton Beer Permit Board, which has the same membership as the council, approved a beer permit for an Anderson County Animal Rescue fundraiser.

Trials of Ragnarok will be held at Carden Farm Park from noon-8 p.m. Oct. 10 and noon-6 p.m. Oct. 11. The event will feature Viking-themed competitions, food, shopping and entertainment.

More information, including competition registration and tickets, is available through Oathbound Events.
